CBD for depression | 13 research studies
CBD for depression, 13 clinical studies indicate the use of CBD oil for depression. The Chinese were the first to appreciate the medicinal properties of his the cannabis plant. Literature from this period suggests that cannabis was recommended for absent mindedness, rheumatic pains, constipation and disorders of the female reproductive tract. Chinese doctors used every part of the plant, including the seeds, stalks, oil, roots and leaves. The drug was administered in pills and in various porridge style pastes.
Cannabis was also used in Ayurvedic medicine which originated in India. Cannabis increases 'gastric fire' or digestion. The first major work to lay out the uses of cannabis in medicine was the Ayurvedic treatise of Sushruta Samhita written in 600 BC. This book described over 700 plant based medicines.
In Western medicine basing their knowledge on the Greek and Roman physicians Dioscorides and Galen, medieval herbalists in the West recommended cannabis for a variety of cures including coughs, jaundices, and bed wetting. In 1693 English painter and author William Salmon wrote that the seeds, leaves and juice of cannabis, plus essence and decoctions were all widely available in pharmacists shops. Later William O'Shaughnessy (1809-1889) Assistant Surgeon and Professor of Chemistry at the medical college in Calcutta published a paper entitled 'On the Preparations of the Indian Hemp or Gunjah, their effects on the Animal System of Health and their Utility in the treatment of Tetanus and other convulsive diseases.
The US Pharmacopeia would continue to list cannabis until 1941. But whereas up to the 1930s cannabis was seen as a positive, useful medicine, in 1936, under the bombardment of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, negative campaign, the experts capitulated to ignorance and propaganda, and it was downgraded.
The war on drugs and the war on cannabis continues. However through the power of new media, people movements, and intelligent scientists, attitudes are changing quickly. There is a growing body of evidence for cannabis in the treatment of numerous diseases from cancer to depression.

Valerian health benefits anxiety, insomnia, depression
http://drtomobrien.ie/valerian-natures-tranquilizer/
Mental health today in Ireland is something that concerns all of us. We all suffer from depression, anxiety, insomnia and addiction at some level and at some time. Yes, its true, we do. Eckart Tolle suggests the biggest addiction of our time is addiction to thinking! Think about it 😉
The main discourse or approach to treating mental health is informed by the medical model. Your recommended to go to your GP (Doctor), who will most likely prescribe you anti-depressants, or anti-anxiety drugs. All of these drugs have limited outcomes and often leave people with nasty side effects.
Herbal medicine is another pathway, to treat depression, anxiety and addiction. However it has been overshadowed and dominated by the power of the medical model that abaondoned natural healing in favor of the scientific model. Today we know that science is limited. It has its place, but so does nature.
There are many herbs that can be used to treat the nervous system such as skull cap, valerian, St John's wort, passion flower and lemon balm to mention a few. Many of these herbs have been studies and show to be beneficial. However due to the power and influence of the pharmaceutical industry, it does not want people to believe that nature can heal because it sees people as consumers.
Valerian is one of the most effective herbs that a herbalist can use to treat anxiety and stress. It was first used by Hippocrates the father of medicine. Valerian contains volatile oils valerine and valerenal. Valerian works by suppressing the central nervous system.
Its actions are sedative, hypnotic, anti-spasmodic and carminative. Valerian is especially effective to reduce stress, tension and anxiety. It helps to improve sleep and over all well being. Valerian has also been found to be effective for improving heart health and can be used to treat irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and palpitations. Valerian combines well with hawthorn, another great heart herb.
Valerian is safe to use and non addictive.
Treating the nervous system valerian combines well with skull cap, oat straw, mother wort, and passion flower.
Contradictions and interactions: Do not use when pregnant, or if you are a lacating mother. Do not use if you suffer from liver disease or if your prescribed anti-anxiety medications. Always consult your herbalist when taking herbs or your doctor if changing your medications. This post is for information purposes only and herbs must be used under the supervision of a qualified herbalist.

1. Kava has been shown to possess mild anti depressant properties, making it suitable for the treatment of anxiety associated with depression - without the negative side effects of prescribed anti depressants
Sarris et al 2009
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19430766
2. Its also a hypnotic and so a useful treatment for insomnia
Kava helps to improve the quality of sleep significantly
it reduces active wakefulness and significantly prolongs sleep, compared with placebo
Unlike prescription drugs for anxiety, kava does not appear to interfere with mental alertness, up set the stomach, or foster a dependency on the herb.
Yurcheshen et al 2015
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26265921
Wheatley 2001
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11536390
3. A major scientific review of kava concluded that kava extract has significant anti anxiety activity and is superior to placebo for treating anxiety
(Pittler & Ernst 2000).
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10653213
According to the authors of the review, none of the trials reported any hepatotoxic events and seven trials measured liver enzyme levels as safety parameters and reported no clinically significant changes.
The herb appears to be as effective treating anxiety as popular prescription tranquillisers such as diazepam.
4. Kava may have a role in reducing anxiety and improving subjective wellbeing during benzodiazepine withdrawal, according to a 2001 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
Malsch & Kieser 2001
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11605083

Geller and Studie 2007
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17194961
8. Kava kava has been reported to possess anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. We are well aware that the state of the immune system and the inflammatory process that can develop both play vital roles in the progression of cancer.
A study in the South Pacific where cancer rates are low, despite high rates of tobacco consumption - found that the more kava consumed by a population the lower the cancer incidence for a population - the data suggests there is a close inverse relationship between cancer incidence and kava consumption
Steiner 2000
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11149250
Other studies have shown kava to have anti cancer properties
Nadiah Abu et al 2013
https://cancerci.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1475-2867-13-102
Kava has also been found to protect against prostate cancer

Herbal remedies for a methadone detox
In Ireland methadone is sometimes called liquid handcuffs as users feel trapped and bound to their clinic and the life that surrounds collecting their methadone often on a daily basis.
First thing is to remember if you are thinking about coming off any medications you should talk to your prescribing doctor first. The information in this video is for educational purposes only. And you should consult with a herbalist before going on a course of herbs.
Methadone is an opioid medication and substitute drug for people dependent on heroin. Methadone helps people stop using heroin. However methadone is addictive and many users end up on methadone for years.
When users want to come off methadone, they struggle with the withdrawal symptoms and risk relapse and overdose if they use heroin during a methadone detox. Methadone on its own is a relatively safe drug.
The problem is that many methadone users are also on a cocktail of prescribed drugs including benzodiazepines and sleeping pills on top of their methadone. Many die before getting an opportunity to come off methadone.
Herbal medicine can play an important role in supporting people to over come their addiction to methadone and other drugs.
So here are some of the herbs that I can use to help someone with the withdrawal symptoms as they are tapered off methadone over a period of a year.
Herbs to nurture and support the Nervous system
Valerian
Skull cap
St Johns Wort
Wood betony
Wild lettuce
and Hops
Herbs to support regeneration of the Liver
Milk Thistle
Dandelion
Burdock root
Artichoke
and Turmeric
Adaptogen herbs to support people through a process of change and stress
Siberian ginseng
Ashwaganda
Astragalus
and Licorice
Heart herbs to support the cardio vascular system
Hawthorn
Motherwort
and Cayenne pepper
Herbs to improve digestion and move constipation
Meadowsweet
Barberry
Cascara Sagrada
Licorice
Rhubarb root
and Ginger
Urinary tract herbs to support elimination of toxins
Yarrow
Celery seed
Juniper
and Bearberry
Herbs for adrenal fatigue and for energy
Ginkgo
Korean ginseng
Licorice
Astragalus
and Ashwagandha
I would also use the herb devils claw for muscle aches and pains
So we have wide range of herbs to draw on and to support someone going through a methadone detox.
Many of these herbs are supported by scientific research
A successful methadone detox involves more than herbs.
You will need a holistic plan to support you during your detox journey
You must be motivated and want to start a detox
You will need social supports, friends and family
You will need to be in secure housing
You will need to work in partnership with your doctor, an herbalist and a counsellor
Your doctor will support you with a methadone tapering detox during the first year
You will need to improve your diet
You should also consider mindfulness meditations
and keep busy during your detox by taking up exercise, or doing a course that interests you
Remember talk to your prescribing doctor before coming off any medications and talk to an herbalist before starting a course of herbs.
I wish you well on your detox journey!
Caution:
Remember always consult with a doctor if you have an illness and consult with an herbalist if you want to go on a course of herbs.
These videos are for information purposes only. If you taking medications consult with a medical doctor. If you want to take a course of herbs I recommend you talk to a herbalist. If you want more information contact me by email.
